Hill FC were drawn against unbeaten Pedoborough in the Round Of 16 tie which the lads knew would be a tough match, made even tougher by the low number of players available. The weather at a scorching 27° meant the lads were really in for a long day.
The game was very even in the first half with the team that was initially thrown together really digging in and putting in a shift, the closest it was to any goals were two clearances off our own goal line that other referees may have otherwise given. All in all going into halftime the lads had many positives to carry the positive attitude into the second half.
The second half saw more of that drive the Hill had displayed in the first, with most of play happening in the opposition half with the team constantly knocking on the door and breaking down their defence. Cian Moloney became the man to do it, taking the ball down with his chest and volleying it into the roof of the net brilliantly and getting the lead this team deserved. However Pedoborough picked up the intensity of their game and got down our half with speed. Conor Murphy had only turn two of their players off the ball before the ball hit off his upper arm and a penalty was awarded. Conor Hall who up to this point had a fantastic game with it being his competitive match for the club, unfortunately was beaten from the spot and the opposition got themselves level.
In the end despite many chances to see off the game from The Hill, Pedoborough were able to hold us off to bring the game to penalties, the club’s first time being involved in one. It was a dreaded call to make, but everyone who was asked to take a penalty accepted the call with optimism. Devon was unfortunate as in the face of stepping up to take our first penalty, he struck the outside of the post. Evan, Ben Finlay and Sean Kelly converted theirs however a mistake was never forthcoming for Pedoborough who dispatched all five of their penalties to progress to the quarter final.
